“To everything, there is a season….a time to plant and a time to pluck up,” Ecclesiastes 3. On Saturday, April 23, we might add: “a time to pluck up weeds and debris … and a time to eat hot dogs and hamburgers!”
The employees of Whole Foods will be volunteering in the garden along with the Girl Scouts. Please join us too!
We will be completing the Spring clean-up of the common spaces in the garden and the pathways.
All renewals were due February 28th. If you want to renew your plot, you need to send your check in ASAP. If you are concerned about having your plot given away, call Laura at the church office (214- 526-7291) to be sure she holds your plot until she gets your check.
Saturday, March 12th we will be having a work day in the garden from 10:00 am-2:00 pm. One of our garden members (Tom Irwin) has volunteered to bring his grill and feed all workers burgers and hot dogs. We will be clearing out weeds in common areas, adding wood chips to the pathways, and doing general clean up. Last week we got our supply of compost, so it's a good time to work on preparing your garden for planting.
Since our gardens are only one year old, they are not going to need much organic matter (compost) this year. If your soil is a little low, go ahead and add compost. I usually plant my garden, wait until the plants are a few inches high, and then add compost on top of my plant to use like mulch. Incidentally, I have some volunteers from a local college helping in the garden this Saturday (3/5) so I will be there from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm. If you would like any help or advice, come over and I will be glad to answer any questions.

We had a truck-load of high-quality compost delivered and is here for the use of our gardeners. Please use it as you need.
All renewals were due February 28th. Come March 1st, all plots not paid for will be available for new gardeners. If you want to renew your plot, you need to send your check in ASAP. If you are concerned about having your plot given away, call Laura at the church office (214- 526-7291) to be sure she holds your plot until she gets your check.
Unto everything there is a season. It is time to start thinking about the coming season and our spring crops!

Now that our harvest is coming in, we want to let everyone know how to donate your produce. Bill Anderson, plot # 17, has kindly agreed to be the coordinator of this project. He will collect all of the food donations Tuesday evenings and deliver them to North Dallas Shared ministries the next (Wednesday) morning.
If you have any produce that you would like to donate to those less fortunate, be sure to put it in the red plastic tray (looks like a bread delivery tray) which will be placed next to the bushes in the front part of the garden between the first two plots.
Bill lives quite close and if we need him to make more than one delivery a week he would be glad to do this also.
Hundreds of our neighbors are on our campus every week for the Central Dog Park and the Acers Community Garden. We are inviting them to join us for monthly picnics this summer. Our first one on June 9th was wonderful and we forward to the next on on July 14th.

The Dedication Ceremony and roll out for the new Acers Community Garden will take place Sunday, March 21st at 1:00 PM.
We are dedicating this community garden to honor the Acers family. We are acknowledging a critical link in the chain of Dallas gardens. From 1986-89 Maurice Acers headed the Advisory Council of Communities Foundation of Texas and it was his far-sighted leadership that resulted in the Communities Foundation providing land on which the first Asian Garden was built. Since that time, Communities Foundation of Texas has provided other tracts for additional gardens.
Today, we are proud to honor the Acers family name with the dedication of this land which we know will continue and sustain a wonderful legacy of the family's generous support of our city, our neighborhoods and our church. Please join me in expressing our thanks to Effie Elizabeth Acers, Maurice and Ebby Halliday Acers

Some may have noticed our new Acers Community Garden under development on the southern part of our campus. The Acers Community Garden is coming! Count on it! Believe in it! April 1st will be more than a corny joke! On that day, a new garden will have the sun shining through the Westside Drive bushes just south of Central Christian Church. Individual plots will have different plants, fruits, and vegetable growing. In addition of wonderful garden-fresh food for our gardeners, a portion of the crop from the Community Garden will be grown for the Food Pantry of North Dallas Shared Ministries as a contribution from all the gardeners. |
Children from the city will get to see what farming is all about. Dallas residents who grew up on farms can return to their roots.
