The Chancel
The chancel is the raised area that the congregation faces most of the time during worship. On the congregation’s right is the pulpit. It is the symbol of the pastor’s authority to proclaim the Word of God. On the congregation’s left is the lectern, from which the Bible is read. In the center is the communion table, where we celebrate the Lord’s Supper or Communion every Sunday. “Word” (the Bible) and “sacrament” (the Lord’s Supper, sometimes called “ordinance” along with baptism) are the essential ingredients in the worship of the community of faith.
