Community Service
Extending the hospitable hands of Jesus Christ to our nearer neighbors is the rationale for Central Christian Church’s involvement in community service.
One of the most active community service groups is the Westside Workers. They meet every Wednesday morning to sew, knit, stuff pillows, comforters, afghans, caps for cancer patients who receive them through the American Cancer Society and Parkland Hospital. Each one comes with a note of compassion and encouragement to a patient when they are dealing with what may be the most serious health challenge of their lives.
The first and second Sundays of each month are “food Sundays.” Non-perishable food is collected in the baskets at the west end of the Hall of Missions. Then it is delivered to North Dallas Shared Ministries to be distributed to needy people in the community. North Dallas Shared Ministries also uses volunteers from many churches in the community. Serving there not only benefits the recipients of the assistance, but is an inspiring experience of shared service and fellowship.
Through the congregation’s giving as well as through the special contributions of other church groups, such as Sunday school classes, Central Christian Church gives financial support to several community organizations including: Salvation Army, Bryan’s House, Genesis Center, Austin Street Centre and others.
By working together with other congregations of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) through the Week of Compassion ministry, Central Christian Church is able to support community ministries to people in times of crises such as floods, storms and other disasters. Some of these will be close at hand here in North Texas and others will be around the world. A regular offering is taken each February, the Week of Compassion is a way to respond quickly when unexpected disasters strike.
Several community organizations hold their meetings at Central Christian Church. The church intends to be a community center that benefits all of our neighbors and makes the area a better place to live.
