Dove Symbols
In the New Testament the dove is principally a symbol of the Holy Spirit descending on God’s people, as happened at Jesus’ baptism (Matthew 3:16; Mark 1:10; Luke 3:22; John 1:32). Recalling the tongues of fire at Pentecost (Acts 2:3), flame is a symbol of the Holy Spirit as well as a sign of God’s presence.
