Our Sanctuary and a Tour of its Details
Our sanctuary is the “family room” of the community of Central Christian Church. We have made a space for God to meet us. Of course, God can meet us anywhere, but this space is planned to draw our attention to God. Here is where we celebrate life’s most important milestones. Here is where we dedicate our children to God. Here is where we baptize new believers into the community of faith. Here is where we celebrate our marriages. Here is where we say “good-bye” and commemorate the lives of those who have died. Here is where we welcome new people into the community. Here is where we commission and ordain those God has called to lead the community. Here is where we journey with Jesus through the rhythms of the year. Here is where we participate at the Lord’s Table every Sunday.
Our sanctuary is not a hideout where we escape life’s uncomfortable realities. Rather, it is the place where we bring our burdens and tensions, joys and triumphs to be shared with God in the community of faith. Our sanctuary is not a temple, as though God resides there but not elsewhere. Rather, it reminds us that God’s Holy Spirit dwells within every believer, with all who are contrite and humble in spirit. (Isaiah 57:15) Our sanctuary affirms that we are called to carry the presence of God with us to our neighbors near and far.
The chancel cross and crown and the rose window are not only the visual focus of our sanctuary, they are the defining starting point for everything else in the sanctuary.
