Dog Park Tidbits and Treats
Central Dog Park was an idea whose time had come. The fenced property in back of the church, almost an acre, had been unused for quite some time. It was most recently the playground for Covenant Christian School; which outgrew Central, and moved to a new location several years ago.
Occasionally, neighbors would come through the open gates, bringing their dogs. We took inspiration from that, and decided the solution to a silent playground was right in front of our noses: make it a “real” dog park.
Central Dog Park opened September 9, 2006. It was an immediate success.
Our neighbors, near and far, have embraced the Park and made it their own, as we had hoped. It’s not only a great place for dogs to run and play, it’s a shady, welcoming place to relax and get to know each other; even though we often know the dogs’ names before we learn the human ones. Central Dog Park is a daily blessing to the church and the neighborhood.
In April, volunteers from Central Christian and friends of the Dog Park became Sod-Busters, so to speak. We put down four pallets of St. Augustine sod – covering a big bald spot in the middle of the park. We were able to do this because of the incredible generosity of people who use the park. Their contributions are greatly appreciated, and put to good use.
In May, we showed off the new grass with a big party. We served up burgers, doggie bones and a lot of other good stuff in appreciation to the dog park patrons who helped make the park such a friendly, delightful place.
In October, we will have our annual St. Francis “Pet Blessing.” Stay tuned for more details.
