The Summer 2009 Production - "84 Charing Cross Road"
When was the last time you got a letter?
There’s nothing like the anticipation and excitement of seeing an envelope with your name on it, and a return address that’s not a junk mail Post Office Box.
In these days of email and text messaging, a letter is a gift. In the upcoming Westside Players Production of “84 Charing Cross Road,” the letters between a New York writer and the staff at Marks & Co., a London bookshop, become “gifts” that are exchanged over a 20-year, trans-Atlantic friendship.
A person devoted to literary or scholarly pursuit was often called a “man of letters.” A “woman of letters” would certainly fit Helene Hanff, one of the main characters in “84 Charing Cross Road.” She orders obscure classics and English literature from the London bookstore, and becomes fast friends with Frank Doel and the people in the shop -- even sending them food parcels during the post-war shortages. Her letters turn out to be a source of anticipation and entertainment in the tiny London bookstore. They learn about life in a New York brownstone, and the struggles of an American television writer. And the letters from the shop provide Helene with a glimpse of the England she so longs to visit.
Westside Players presents “84 Charing Cross Road” August 28th, 29th at 8:00 PM and August 30th at 2:00 PM. Tickets may be purchased at the door. Tickets are $7 each.
Cast includes: BJ AUSTIN, MICHAEL RAINES, SUSAN SHINN, AMANDA MALLORY, WILL WHITE, ERYN SCOTT, BECKY RIGGINS, and BOB BOYLE.
Directed by ED DELATTE.
The Summer 2008 Production - "Annie Jr."
Broadway critic Clive Barnes stated in his review of the original production, “To dislike the new musical Annie….would be tantamount to disliking motherhood, peanut butter, friendly mongrel dogs and nostalgia.”
Annie Jr. is a one hour version of the original, featuring seven very special little girls. Heading the cast as Annie is eleven year old Kyra Sanchez who appeared last Summer as a servant in Joyful Noise, and who played a leading role two years ago in I Remember Mama.
Annie’s orphan friends are Austin Anderton (Kate), Allegra Florimbi (Duffy), Rosie Ninesling (Tessie), Vannya Pavesio (July), Lexi Ratcliff (Molly) and Sierra Sanchez (Pepper).
Playing featured roles are B. J. Austin (Miss Hannigan), David Tinney (Daddy Warbucks) and Susan Shinn (Grace Farrell). Norman Stolpe will portray President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Others in the large cast include Tina Weger (Lily St. Regis), Whit Whittington (Rooster Hannigan), John Hawley (Lt. Ward), Ben Hawely (Bundles, the laundry man), Mickey Greer (the Apple Seller), Will White (Bert Healy) and Mary Ann Duckworth and Joseph Joiner as servants to Daddy Warbucks. Sierra Sanchez appears as a “Star to Be.” Sandy, Annie’s Dog, is Max Boddy.
The production is directed by Ed DeLatte, along with Carolyn Shinn (costumes), John Shinn (technical direction and sound), Bill Anderton (audio engineer), Nina Booth (set design), John Hawley (light design) and Mickey Greer (properties).
Performances on Friday, August 22 and Saturday, August 23 begin at 7:00 PM. The Sunday matinee on August 24 begins at 1:00 PM. All tickets are $10 which include the meal and the production.
The Summer 2007 Production - "Joyful Noise"
The Summer 2007 production was "Joyful Noise" presented on August 10-12, 2007. Written by BYU faculty member Tim Slover (Dr. Slover is now the Director of the University of Utah Department of Theatre's "London Theatre Study Abroad Program"), the play tells the true story of George Frederic Handel and his struggles to write and perform his famous "Messiah" oratorio. A Note From Ed DeLatte, Director/Producer of the Westside Players
"I began directing the Westside Players in the summer of 1995, when I retired from full time teaching at the University of North Texas. During these twelve years I have been ably assisted by full-time veterans: Carolyn Shinn, John Shinn, Susan Shinn, Mary Anne Duckworth and John Hawley. Also I must include some 150 actors, technicians, designers and builders who volunteer 6 to 8 weeks preparing and performing each Summer. Westside Players have given well over 150 performances.
Our mission is to perform great works of dramatic literature; those which enlighten and entertain our audience of church members, families and friends. We are a group of dedicated amateurs who act in a professional manner; all are unpaid and 95% are members of our congregation.
We invite anyone interested in theatre, both on stage and backstage, to contact the church office, leaving your name and number." Click here for our contact information.
